Personalized 7T fMRI-Guided navigation TMS targeting: Preliminary data of speech-motor cortex in speech perception

TMS enables researchers to temporarily disrupt neural activity in specific regions of the brain, establishing a causal link between neural activity and behavior. Accurately targeting precise cortical areas and retrospective E-field modeling are crucial for investigating the roles of specific cortical areas. In our study, we utilized personalized 7T fMRI-guided navigation TMS, demonstrating that disrupting neural activity in the speech-motor cortex can affect speech perception. The tailoring of brain stimulation to an individual’s distinctive brain structure and connectivity patterns substantially enhances the likelihood of achieving the desired therapeutic outcomes while concurrently minimizing adverse effects. Precise anatomical targeting ensures that stimulation is accurately located in the correct cortical area, while retrospective E-field modeling provides a more accurate estimate of the electric fields generated by the stimulation. “
